Spinal & Extremity Adjustments
Beginning by conducting a Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) or Functional Movement Screens (FMS) our doctors at Functional Health are able to perform spinal and extremity adjustments to ensure that you maintain the vital connection in your body that allows all your systems to work in cohesive collaboration.
Spinal adjustments are used to correct subluxations or slight misalignments of the vertebrae. These subluxations are often thought to be the cause for many health problems. The term “adjustment” refers to the specific force chiropractors apply to vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally.
At Functional Health, when our chiropractors perform an adjustment the goal is to reduce or correct the subluxation therefore increasing a patient’s range of motion, decreasing pain, muscle spasms, and/or nerve inflammation. Oftentimes, patients will report hearing a “cracking” sound, although some adjustments do not have this sound. This is the sound of gas being released from the spinal joints and is nothing to cause alarm. This sensation is usually accompanied by feeling relieved. Infrequently, minor discomfort is experienced by patients usually if the surrounding muscles are in spasm or a patient tenses when an adjustment is occuring.
Although the adjustment of a patient’s spine is the primary focus of some chiropractors due to our core beliefs at Functional Health and our functional approach to looking at the body; we will not only treat the spine but a patient’s extremities as well, as our goal is to have our patients living active and healthy lives that allows all your systems to work in cohesive collaboration.
Due to patients’ joints being used on a daily basis, the likelihood of injuries occurring is likely. Shoulder problems, chronic ankle sprains, and tennis elbow are some of the most common conditions which resolve quickly with appropriate extremity adjustments. In these instances our doctors will use a combined approach of adjustments with Active Release Techniques (ART), therapeutic exercises and stretches, Kinesio Taping, Low Level Laser Therapy, Acupuncture, Massage Therapy or custom orthotics to treat problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves to achieve a full and timely recovery and long term stability.
Overall, Functional Health uses spinal and extremity adjustments to remove obstacles which may interfere with your ability to live an active and healthy life.
